The Same Sky, Are the Lyrics or Tune More Important?

(The Same Sky) by Pak Ho Chau (周柏豪) is the only song I’ve been playing whenever I’m at home over the past few days. I like the lyrics and the rhythm has a nice flow to it. It’s not the first time I looped a song for days though. Mosaic Kakera by Sunset Swish was also one of my favourites (and still is).

Anyway, below you’ll find the Chinese lyrics and my attempt at a translation.

I’ve tried ignoring the people around me, wandering everywhere.
I’ve tried searching for principles in darkness even though there wasn’t enough light.
Tell me quickly where the Forbidden Fruit is,
For that is where I must go, it’s where the light is.
The past is in the past, it has helped confirm my answer.

I want to expand my world, tour the stars.
As long as you persevere you’ll have your dream.
You and I experience the same minutes of time, are under the same sky,
Have the same identity, our status is greater than the skies.
We can do it, the world is in harmony.

We breathe the same air, have the same thoughts.
Wonderful things await us, you don’t have to compare to me.
You have your own weapons and just like you I can throw up my arms,
Get disheartened and have even been ever so lonely.
We need courage, courage will create new principles for us.

I want to expand my world, tour the stars.
As long as you persevere you’ll have your dream.
You and I experience the same minutes of time, are under the same sky,
Have the same identity, our status is greater than the skies.
I will surpass these skies, as long as I have my hands I can do something.
No one knows which way is facing south, west or east.
We don’t know how we’ll get along but, we’re all shooting through the skies.
We’ll come across each other, there’s no need to fear the heights.

I want to expand my world, tour the stars.
As long as you persevere you’ll have your dream.
You and I experience the same minutes of time, are under the same sky,
Have the same identity, our status is greater than the skies.
I will surpass these skies, as long as I have my hands I can do something.

We’ll come across each other, there’s no need to fear the heights.

Translation Notes

我要擴闊我天空 literally translates as, “I want to expand my skies” but obviously that doesn’t make sense in English so I used “world” instead.

Thoughts

The Chinese pronoun “井底之蛙 (a frog in the well)” came to mind when I pay attention to the lyrics which is used to describe someone who has very limited knowledge. The story behind it is about a frog that is stuck living in a well and because of that, it has a limited view of the sky and thinks it is only the size of the well’s opening. When a bird drops by one day, it tells the frog the sky is much bigger than it thinks. The frog doesn’t believe the bird until they fly outside of the well. What it means is you won’t know what the world is really like until you go out there.

I also like how the Pak Ho didn’t choose to use “hours” or “seconds” in his lyrics for this song. He’s talking about the world so “hours” wouldn’t be right since there are different time zones and seconds is just too short. Minutes seems just right and we do live in the same minutes.

This reminds me… There’s a question on the Wii’s “Everybody Votes” channel just now that asks, “In your opinion, which is more important in a song? The music or the lyrics?” It’ll be interesting to see how the results turn out. For me I think it’s both really but since you can only pick one answer, I chose melody because it’s what makes your first impressions.

On another note, I still don’t get how the “Distance from popular opinion” works. What’s the maximum distance? I’m at 120m just now but the closest I got was 20m if I remember correctly.
